生 LIFE

10 Spaces of Habitat Interior Design Exhibition

Xiamen Habitat Design and Life Festival (HDLF), co-organized by Xiamen Stone Fair, Xiamen Bath & Kitchen Fair and International Habitat Interior Design Association (IHIDA) made its debut at Xiamen Stone Fair 2021 on May 18-21 in Xiamen International Conference and Exhibition Center.

As a highlight of HDLF, Habitat Interior Design Exhibition presented the application of stone materials in 10 living spaces during the 4-day show to express the theme of “Dwell with Stone”. We were honored to invite world-renowned designer, president of IHIDA, Steve Leung as the chief curator, Chen Fangxiao as executive curator, 9 designers including Patrick Leung, Ricky Wong, Meng Ye, Huang Quan, Gary Zeng, Lai Yanan, Sun Huafeng, Pang Xi and Wu Wenli as co-curators of the exhibition. The exhibition presented an unprecedented feast of stone and became a must-visit for designers and practitioners in different fields.

On May 18, the 10 living space curators shared their design works of the living space and the design concepts with the online audience via onsite live streaming.

Stairs in the mirror
The designer used “stone” as the main material of this design work, creating a visual impact with a mirror and extend its concept thgouth a film played in front of the stairs, allowing viewers to feel the stone material in a different way and think about the definition of human living space.
While standing in the entrance of the space, you can find a colorful marble staircase on the left that symbolizes the foundation of human settlements. The stone on the steps reflects the traces of the years. The background, ceiling and both sides are composed of mirrors, which extends the line of sight. The LED screen on the right plays a film of different human settlements, trying to evoke the viewers’ memories of life.
The designer hopes that under any circumstances, all the viewers can think of the important time and significance brought to us in this space.
The talent of Nature
The theme of this space is the nature and is composed of marble, granite, quartz stone, and natural pebbles. From 5 perspectives of sky, earth, water, wood and life, the designer hopes to make viewers rethink in the post-pandemic era through an immersive experience and demonstrate the vision for a better life of co-existence and co-prosperity with the nature.
After experiencing the pandemic, we could feel the gift of nature and perception that nature brought to us, then reflect on our personal behaviors and values and cherish what we have possessed now.
SKY
When looking at the boundless sky, it is like a reflection and resonance of one’s mind. It is vast and ever-changing, with the sun, the moon and the stars shining above.
EARTH
Feel the tough and stable earth beneath which nourishes plants, cereals and grains. And all life return to the earth in the end.
WATER
Crystal-clear and shapeless water is the source of life. The shape can vary from containers to containers. The flow of water makes it with infinite vitality.
WOOD
Forests are the rich source of sustainable development on earth. During the long time, trees protect, heal and accompany us with their tenacious vitality.
LIFE
There are diversified species in the world. We, human beings are exploring the common well-being of living communities from a new perspective.
Breakthrough
The space was inspired by the Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong, a legendary housing estate in the 1980s. It is more of a conceptual exhibition, without too many special settings. Crowded but vast, life is chaotic but in order. From the old village to the new city, from chaos to order, from history to reality, hope is born out of ruins. It brings endless inspiration to people.
There's no making without breaking. No matter building, designing, or living. Breaking the original rules can create new rules. The fragmented design of the splicing of different materials breaks the conventional stone design and creates a new stone craft and a new visual experience.
The era we live now is ever-evolving and the pace of life is fast as well. Many things have become superficial and ‘convenient’, yet without letting us think deeply. Our thoughts seemed to disappear. Therefore, what I am presenting today is not a beautiful and decent space, but an artistic installation. I hope to use some old elements, something that has been destroyed by us, and make contrast between new and old to arouse everyone's memories and thoughts from the past.
Insight
In this living space, I hope to create a feeling of an alien planet. Because no matter how far we are from the city, there will be people. Simply going away from the hustle and bustle of the city cannot solve our problems.  Thus, why not just escape to another planet and look back at earth.
The designer said he rarely use beige stone before and it was the first time that he chose travertine to integrate traditional stone material with modern patterns. The whole space is composed of various kinds of travertine which is rich in texture and clear stripes. It makes people feel mild. The application of this kind of stone often appears strong cultural and historical charm.
We hope to present a modern classic style in this space. The walls are divided and arranged by geometric figures, showing a three-dimensional and high-level sense as a whole. The ground part is collaged through different colors of travertine in order to make viewers sink their hearts and feel the calmness and solidity this space brings.
Spiritual Space
The idea of this space was inspired by one of my trips to the rainforest. In the rainforest, there are tall trees on one side and a slowly flowing stream on the other side with many green plants. When you walk in the rainforest, you may see birds flying or find some scattered mushrooms. Everything is so beautiful and lively.
This space is mainly made of natural stone. The "stream" in the middle is built with a stone weighing about 10 tons. The theme of this space is to focus on the natural and environmental protection of stone. Therefore, the designer did not set a ceiling in this space. And in order to save stone materials, the designer used mirror which can also create an ambience of being in the forest.
Living in modern city, we enjoyed the convenience of modern materials, but lost the beauty of nature. Wandering in the forest, listening to the gurgling water and smelling the fragrance of birds and flowers, then you will find everything is so tranquile.
Examine the subtle relationship between "stone and its essence" from a new perspective
The designer hope to demonstrate the relationship between surface and interior in space design through artistic expression. The highlight of this space is the use of materials to connect time and space, thereby making viewers think about the relationship between human and nature in the current living form.
The designer used traditional stone materials innovatively through different combinations of colors and shapes. The texture of the material has become a topic worth exploring in the design process, and it is also a fun experiment in creating the rhythm of the space.
The marble, Pieces of Impression Lafite were displayed on the entrance wall, retaining the texture of the stone and traces of handwork, symbolizing the primary form of the transformation of man and nature.
Through the combination of two stone textures, the contrast between smooth and rough surfaces forms a hierarchy of materials, expressing reflections on the relationship of nature.
Travel in May
The designer created this space to think about how to shorten the distance between nature and living environment. From pillars, caves, tents, mud bricks to reinforced concrete buildings, they have created all kinds of living forms. With the continuous development of the human settlement environment along with the historical evolution, human beings have been seeking a better way of life. The faster the development of science and technology, the more people are aware of the importance and irreplaceability of the natural environment.
This space brought us an immersive space experience by magnifying natural elements - light, shadow, green plants, stones and bionic artworks.
There were 3 scenarios in this space - Pathfinding, Sketching and the Beast
The curved entry path and the light attracted viewers into the space. By using layers of gauze, it created a sense of mystery in the wild. The delicacy of dora marble and the roughness of raw blocks form a strong visual conflict. In sketching section, the designer placed an interactive setting with colored crayons and paper for viewers to sketch the scene in their way aimlessly. In this era of too much emphasis on efficiency, we rarely have the courage to do aimless things.
Moving forward, the designer selected two works of art - the bear round table and the oil barrel leopard sculpture, which let viewers observe the aesthetic value of various life in nature with art and art furniture. The exhibition hall also extends the visual space through three mirrors, while creating a fantasy dream.
Mirror Image
The designer set a bathroom space to demonstrate the theme of mirror and truth. The world is fast-changing, therefore, the designer used some pink acrylic plates to represent a bustling and chaotic world. Moreover, these plates can be mirrors as well that they can reflect each viewer's mind.
Wandering through the bustling world to the bathroom space, one can have a clear understanding of himself/herself. Because only after removing all masks that people can face themselves honestly. Therefore, the designer wanted to show the influence of space and materials on people's inner changes.
There is a mirror in the opposite of the bathroom space. When you walk through the space, different refraction surfaces will let you see yourself from different angles, which is a metaphor for various aspects of life.
Casual
In today's fast-paced era, people tend to feel anxious, confused and worried in the urban cities.
The designer wished to integrate indoor and outdoor scenary to make it symmetrical. No matter where the viewers stand, they can enjoy the view. The exhibition hall is structured with an outdoor courtyard and an indoor tea room.
In the tea room, the designer set a square tea table with stone materials used on the surface. There were also paintings and sculptures on the wall, integrating a variety of modern elements, and combining contemporary aesthetics
The overall layout of the space was simple. The square space was separated into left and right parts from the entrance. The right part is a display space. The wall with windows connected to the central tea room. Turn left and go through a partition, viewer can enter the left side of the space where lake stone and potted pine were placed in the corner. Viewer should then go straight and turn right to enter the tea room. The tea table is the latest product developed by Xi Yan brand. The windows and the entrance of the tea room corresponded to each other and formed a unified whole with the outside space.
The designer said, he hope to match the landscape artistic conception by stone, thereby to create an interest ambience of the space.
Mirages in Reflection
Space is like a mirror, reflecting the life state and inner world of the viewer. When you stare at the space, the space is staring at you on the contrary.
Black and gray usually represent rationality and restraint. The space was composed of Amasya Grey and Cream Pinta. It brought a powerful visual impact, making people have unlimited reverie and evoking the power of contemplation and self-examination.
The side walls and the ceiling were made of glass, and a tree flower was stretching from the ceiling, creating a sparkling space atmosphere.
In this quiet and tranquil space, viewers can get along with and talk to themselves by the mirror image, observe themselves and explore the meaning of life. It starts from the mirror space and is more related to the inner self.

The Habitat Interior Design Exhibition not only interpreted the variability and possibility of stone, but also showed the wonderful living ways from a multi-dimensional perspective, generating more thinking and imagination about habitation and stone application.
